Language First is an independent study app that helps you prepare for the IELTS exam. This policy explains, in plain English, what data we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. We have tried to keep it short and honest.
Independence. Language First is an independent study app. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to IELTS, Cambridge University Press & Assessment, the British Council, or IDP Education in any way. IELTS is a trademark of its respective owners, used here only to describe the exam this app helps you prepare for.
What we collect
We collect only what we need to run the app and assess your practice:
- Account details. Your name, email address and optional profile photo, so you can sign in, manage your profile and save your progress.
- Practice submissions. The work you submit while practising. For speaking practice this includes the audio we record of your spoken answers, which is needed to assess your speaking. For writing practice this includes the essays you write. It also covers your answers to reading and listening questions.
- Usage and progress data. Records of your practice activity and the scores you receive, so we can show your progress over time and keep the service working.
How we use your data
We use your data for two purposes:
- To provide the service. Signing you in, assessing your practice, returning your indicative scores, and showing your progress.
- To improve and train our systems. We store the data you submit while using the app and use it to improve and train our assessment systems and study tools.
Indicative scores, not official results
Any band score the app shows you is an indicative practice score estimated by AI. It is not an official IELTS result and does not guarantee or predict the score you will receive in a real exam.
Subscriptions and payments
Subscriptions are sold and processed by Apple through the App Store. Payment is charged to your Apple ID. We never see or store your card details. RevenueCat helps us confirm your subscription entitlement and unlock paid features on your account.
Services that help us run the app
We use carefully selected service providers to operate Language First:
- Supabase provides account access and stores app data.
- Cloudflare stores and delivers audio and other media securely.
- Microsoft Azure supports speech and AI-assisted practice assessment.
- RevenueCat confirms App Store subscription access.
- PostHog provides product usage analytics so we can understand which parts of the app are useful.
- Sentry records technical errors and diagnostics so we can find and repair app problems.
- Resend delivers account and service emails.
These providers process data only to supply the services we use. We do not give them permission to sell your personal data.
Account closure and data retention
You can request account deletion at any time from within the app. The request begins a seven-day undo period. During this period, you can sign in only to undo the deletion request.
If you do not undo the request, your account is archived on day 7. Your original email address becomes available for a new account at that point. The archived record uses an internal deletion label so it cannot be used to sign in.
Your archived account data remains protected until day 30, counted from the date of your original deletion request. On day 30, the account and associated personal study data are erased from our active systems. You should also cancel any active App Store subscription separately so it does not renew.
We do not sell your data
We do not sell your personal data to anyone. We use it to run and improve Language First, as described above.
Who this app is for
Language First is intended for a general audience rated 4+ and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13.
